BVGS House System

At BVGS, all pupils and members of staff are assigned to one of six Houses: Blue, Emerald, Gold, Purple, Red, White.  Each House is managed by a member of staff and within each year group, elected house leaders and deputy leaders will organise events and house activities. In addition to this, each House has a House Captain and Deputy House Captain in Year 13 who act as student leaders within their respective Houses and help coordinate House assemblies.

The House System is intended to build a sense of community between large groups of students and to foster a culture of leadership, teamwork, resilience and accountability across students in the school. The whole-school nature of the House System breaks down year and form divisions allowing pupils to forge bonds with students from other year groups and social groups that they may not interact with in other aspects of school life.

These interactions, along with House-based activities, help engender a shared sense of identity and create a feeling of association between students. Furthermore, by assigning siblings to the same house and making the House System a central part of the school community, students develop a sense of attachment to both their House and the House System as a whole.

Positive Benefits include:
  • To recognise and celebrate success, achievement or excellence.

  • To increase engagement and inclusion for all pupils. Rewarding endeavour, effort and participation.

  • Competitive rivalry through House loyalty.

  • The development of pride, effort, diligence, respect, resilience and responsibility amongst the pupils as well as provide opportunities to showcase school values.

  • To create a further sense of belonging within Houses.

  • Creating vertical friendship groups, supportive peers and roles models.

  • Student Leadership Opportunities.

Our House system, and the competitions that we run under its umbrella, provides fantastic opportunities for our students across so many disciplines. It enables talent to shine, confidence to develop, teamwork to grow and friendly competitive spirit to erupt!
