AI and Digital Literacy
At Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, we believe that digital literacy is a vital skill for modern life. This includes understanding how digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) are used, how they influence information and decisions, and how to engage with them safely, critically and responsibly.
Strong digital literacy supports learning across the curriculum and prepares pupils for further study, the workplace and life beyond school.
Digital literacy at BVGS
Digital literacy goes beyond basic ICT skills. Pupils are supported to:
- Use digital tools effectively and responsibly
- Evaluate online information for accuracy and bias
- Understand digital footprints, privacy and cyber security
- Recognise misinformation, manipulation and deepfakes
- Develop healthy and balanced digital habits
These skills are reinforced through subject teaching and wider school life.
AI awareness and responsible use
AI tools are increasingly visible in education and society. Pupils are taught:
- What AI can and cannot do
- That AI systems do not think or understand like humans
- That AI outputs can be inaccurate or biased
- That AI should support learning, not replace independent thinking
Clear guidance is provided so pupils understand when AI use is appropriate and when it is not.
PSHE, assemblies and workshops
AI and digital literacy are explored through PSHE lessons, assemblies and targeted workshops. These focus on:
- Online safety and responsible digital behaviour
- Digital identity and long-term digital footprints
- Ethical issues surrounding AI and data use
This ensures consistent, age-appropriate guidance across year groups.
Computer Science and understanding AI
In Computer Science, pupils develop an understanding of how digital systems work, including:
- Data, algorithms and programming
- An introduction to machine learning and its limitations
- How bias can arise in automated systems
This supports informed and critical engagement with technology.
AI, careers and the future
Through careers education, pupils explore how AI and digital technologies are shaping the modern workplace. This includes understanding how AI is used across different industries and the continued importance of human skills such as judgement, creativity and critical thinking.
Working with parents and carers
We encourage parents and carers to discuss technology and AI use with their children, support balanced digital habits and reinforce expectations around independent learning.
