We offer an outstanding education–inspiration and excellence – every year to 192 boys from Year 7 onwards. We are very proud of the academic excellence we offer, and also how well our school compares with other selective schools locally, regionally and nationally.
We are successful at GCSE. With 75% of entries scoring between 7-9 in 2022, we are one of the top 20 boys’ schools in England. It is no wonder that we were judged outstanding in all categories by OFSTED when they visited us in October 2014.
This outstanding judgement is founded on a number of things. Firstly, background is not a barrier here. We seek to inspire all our students to be scholars. Students are engaged with their learning and that means that behaviour is outstanding. Our boys are enthusiastic and eager. They are an absolute pleasure to work with.
Importantly, we spend a lot of time as teachers developing the learning habits of the boys. We constantly encourage them to ask questions and be curious. We continuously offer extra challenge and inspiration to stimulate the minds of our boys: lunchtime and after school academic clubs and trips speakers and competitions. These national academic competitions whether in English, History, Geography, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Art, or Music are excellent for stretching and challenging able boys.
We pride ourselves on ‘the Vesey Experience’ which means that while our teaching is exemplary, and our academic results extraordinary, we also offer our students the chance to flourish, and explore their individual talents. Students here can explore their talents through a variety of sporting, music and other extracurricular opportunities, such as: chess, debating or coding club, to name but a few.
Our students are also helped by being part of the world-wide Vesey network. We are so lucky to have our alumni return on a regular basis to their school, to speak to students about their careers and inspire them to aspire to great things. Upon leaving, they become part of the successful and influential network of OVs, whose influence is visible on the global stage.
Curriculum departments have access to the latest technology and teaching methods to support effective learning. These include a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Centre with science laboratories, modern well-equipped and networked information technology suites, specialist mathematics teaching rooms and a robotics room. There are also large art rooms, a specialist music centre, a modern library resources facility and extensive study areas.
The school understands the important contribution that facilities can make to school life and student enjoyment. Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School has spacious mix of accommodation and facilities in extensive and attractive grounds. We have wide ranging specialist facilities that cater for all aspects of the curricular and extra-curricular activity.
Our sports facilities include a floodlit all weather pitch (Middle Field), a multisport sports hall and indoor cricket centre, seven rugby pitches, three cricket squares, a four lane all weather cricket net facility, netball courts, tennis courts and erg room and an extensive range of rowing boats. The school utilises offsite facilities to support rowing, cross country running, cycling and athletics.
