Sixth Form Academic Tutorial Programme

Academic tutorials are an important development of the pastoral system offered in the Sixth Form. It is an opportunity for the form tutor and student to have an honest and open conversation about academic performance in order to make further progress and be successful. 

Timeline

Academic Tutorial 1: Settling in Review

This is a time to discuss:

  • Transition to Sixth Form and / or BVGS
  • Curriculum Entitlement provision in subjects

Academic Tutorial 2: Module and Card Mark Reviews

This individual tutorial will be conducted during March or April to review the progress which has been made. It will need to discuss:

  • 3 C grades or equivalent necessary to return to A2 Level in the summer
  • Performance in relation to ALPS grades
  • Assessment of strengths and areas for improvement

Academic Tutorial 3: UCAS Preparation Meeting

This individual tutorial will be conducted during June or July to offer guidance and support in starting the UCAS process (some will be new to this!). It will:

  • Identify where the student is in decision making for a course / university
  • Offer guidance in how to research courses and universities
  • Offer guidance in making a choice of course or universities
  • Offer support in finding extra-curricular opportunities to support such an application or extracting skills from experiences already gained

Upon entering the Upper Sixth these tutorials will continue:

Academic Tutorial 4: UCAS Reference Meeting

This individual tutorial will be conducted during September or October to discuss the personal statement and information for the UCAS reference. Points to discuss:

  • Commitment to their chosen course
  • Enthusiasm for their chosen course
  • Skills relevant to the course
  • Anything else relevant to their application (e.g. there might be items they cannot fit into their personal statement and want in their reference)

Academic Tutorial 5: Module and Card Mark Reviews

This individual tutorial will be conducted during March or April to review the progress which has been made. It will need to reference:

  • Performance in relation to University grade requirements
  • Assessment of strengths and areas for improvement
